Sport and Recreation for people with physical disabilities

Home.ABOUT US.NEWS.CALENDAR.SPORTS.RECREATION.AWARDS.PHOTOS.CONTACT US.

Athletes compete in wheelchairs that are fastened to the floor. However these chairs allow the fencers freedom of movement in the upper body only and the activity is as fast paced as in able-bodied competitions. Men and women compete in the foil and epée, however only men can compete in the sabre.

Apart from sitting in a fixed wheelchair, fencing is very similar to the able-bodied version of the sport.

Classification Information

Only athletes who use a wheelchair can compete in wheelchair fencing.

Athletes can compete in 2 classes based upon the trunk function / sitting balance.

Fencing in the Paralympics is open to people with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and amputees.
