Sport and Recreation for people with physical disabilities

Home.ABOUT US.NEWS.CALENDAR.SPORTS.RECREATION.AWARDS.PHOTOS.CONTACT US.

Athletes compete in two disciplines, the sonar (three man crew) and international 2.4m (single handed) yachts. Both men and women from all disability groups can compete in Paralympic competition.

Athletes compete in three events which are non-gender specific – the single-person and three-person Keelboats are open to most disability groups, while the Two-person keelboat event is specifically designed for athletes with a severe disability.

Classification Overview

Sailing is a multi-disability sport where athletes from all the disability groups compete together.

The system is based entirely on the functions required to compete in sailing. The four areas in sailing are stability, hand functions, inability and vision.

Athletes are allocated a class based on points ranging from 1 (most limited functional ability) to 7 points (the highest level of functional ability).
