In athletics both men and women compete in most of the same events as their able-bodied counterparts. Athletics has been part of the Paralympic Programme since 1960 and events are open to males and females in all disability groups. The timing and measuring systems used at the Paralympic Games are identical to the ones used at the Olympic Games.

Athletics is available to all people with a disability, apart from little people who can only compete in field events, not track events.
